Objective: The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of Samul-tang(ÞÌÚª÷·) and Kamisamul-tang(Ê¥Ú«ÞÌÚª÷·) on ovariectomized rats in terms of 17¥â-Estradiol, Bone Biochemical Markers and Hemisphere Volume.
Methods: 72 female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups that were Normal Group, Control Group, Experimental Group A(SMT-A Group) and Experimental Group B(SMT-B Group) in order, and each group had 18 members. In Normal Group, normal saline was administrated without ovariectomy; In Control Group, normal saline was administrated after ovariectomy; In Experimental Group A, Samul-tang was administrated after ovariectomy; In Experimental Group B, Kamisamul-tang was administrated after ovariectomy. Each group was examined about the changes of serum 17¥â-estradiol concentration, hemisphere volume, serum cathepsin L activity, serum IL-6 level, serum osteocalcin level, serum total calcium level, serum calcitonin level, serum phosphorus level and bone ash each after 2 weeks, 4 weeks(2nd period) and 8 weeks(3rd period).
Results:1. Experimental group A and B showed the significant increase (p<0.01, p<0.05) in the change of serum 17¥â-estradiol concentration during the 2nd and 3rd period compared to control group.
2. Experimental group A and B showed the significant decrease (p<0.05) in the change of serum cathepsin L activity, serum IL-6 level and serum osteocalcine level, etc. during 3rd period.
3. Group B alone showed significant increase (p<0.05) in the change of serum total calcium level and serum phosphorus level, etc. during 3rd period.
4. Both experimental group A and B didn¡¯t showed the significant increase in the change of hemisphere volume, serum calcitonin level compared to control group.
5. Experimental group A and B all showed the significant increase (p<0.05) in the change of bone ash.
Conclusion: These results suggest that Samul-tang and Kamisamul-tang are effective in postmenopausal syndrome caused by estrogen-deficiency.
